Civil War Soldier Frank Phillips Pocket Bible 

This Civil War artifact is an identified Civil War Soliers pocket bible, belonging to Private Frank Phillips.  Frank enlisted from Utica (Macomb County) Michigan on August 7th of 1862.  He was from Shelby, Michigan.  He was assigned to Company "B" as a Private with the Michigan Twenty-Second Regiment, which as the very last Union Infantry Unit remaining on September 20th of 1863 at the Battle of Chickamauga.  His name and Bible are also featured in a new book entitled "The History of the Michigan Twenty-Second Infantry and the men who served, by Douglas M. STATED FIRST EDITION. Ornately designed gilt blindstamped leather family bible from the Civil War Era, in great shape. No illustrations, but family records pages w/ decorated borders present and filled out. Mainly the WEST Family from GREENVILLE/ JACKSON MISSISSIPPI in the 1830s-1890s. Covers and spine are lightly worn, hinges aret holding. Pages are in good shape, former owner inscriptiuon to EP bled throughto title page, binding is snug and sound. Some minor leather loss to spine. Beautiful stamped design to covers and spine. . A true relic from our Nation during its darkest times following the Civil War...one can only imagine what the family was doing during these times when this Bible was probably a very active player in their religious lives! This is a truly historical piece owned by CHARLES H WEST, a Mississippi steamboat Captain who later had a prominent steamer named after him. The English Version of the Polyglott Bible, Including the Old and New Testaments, With Marginal Readings, etc. Philadelphia: Lippincott, Grambo, & Co., 1855. Pocket style, produced with gilt print on spine 'Polyglott Bible,' Tan leather in great shape on outside, less for some edgewear and minor warping. All edges gilt. Palm sized. Pages are all intact, browned with some staining, yet bound tight, with minor rounding to edges; small split along top edge of front cover against spine. Former owner inscription on front EP, hinges are separating slightly, but holding, but Bible reads and handles fine and is still one solid piece. No illustrations, corners somewhat sharp, minor shelfwear to edges, this book is still in decent condition and is a rare version that is seldom seen, and was very popular during the Civil War. One can only imagine the history within it........

The Polyglot Bible -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The sacred-texts Polyglot Bible displays the text of the Hebrew, Septuagint Greek, New Testament Greek, Vulgate Latin, and King James Versions of the Bible in columnar format. The King James Version contains links to Strong's Lexicon entries which cross-reference the Hebrew Tanach and the Greek New Testament. There are some minor errors in the Strong's voweled Hebrew entries which we intend to fix at some point. When in doubt, consult the Hebrew text on the main Polyglot pages. There are known discrepancies in the numbering of the Book of Psalms, starting with chapter 9. The Septuagint and Vulgate Psalm 9 includes the KJV and Hebrew Psalm 10. This discrepancy continues to the end of the Book of Psalms. In addition, there is one extra verse at the beginning of each Psalm which is not translated in the KJV, so the KJV verse numbering is off as well. Lastly, the Septuagint has a 151st Psalm which is not contained in any of the other versions. $80.00

This thick old Bible is bound in gorgeous weathered leather with 5 raised bands on spine. This is a scarce volume that is in acceptable shape with the majority of the pages clean and unspotted, although there are some spot stains within, some wear to the spine (title label absent), wear to edges and extremities, and front board detached. Family record pages present, filled in for the Allbro/Freeborn families from 1820-1880. This includes Daniel Albro, who served in 4th Regiment, Co. A RI Volunteers in the Civil War, fought in the Battle of Fredericksburg, and was injured shortly after in the War. Nice touch of American history! RARE early American volume, Price$175.00!
